UNCENSORED QUOTES OF THE WEEK:
“Anne Sweeney is one of the most talented, experienced and successful entertainment executives in the world today. She and her team have an extraordinary portfolio of achievements and it is with great pleasure that we bestow upon her the 2012 Honorary Golden Nymph Prize, which serves as international recognition for their contribution to the entertainment industry.”
—H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco said on presenting Disney Media Networks co-chair and Disney/ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney with the prize.
Translation: She deserves the Douchebag Nymph prize for cancelling a European staple: soap operas.
“Of course, with Jonathan that's what you always do. For my money, he's one of the five best actors on the planet. He just unzips his heart and bleeds for ya. We've known each other for so long now that our connection is almost on a spiritual level.”
— Tony Geary in TV GUIDE on his co-star Jonathan Jackson
Translation: I’m one of the top two best actors on the planet.
“I'm very happy to be there this year, especially since it's not in Vegas. I don't know that I could have sat through one more ceremony featuring Elvis impersonators and French-Canadian bungee jumpers.”
— Geary on HLN’s Emmy telecast
Translation: If I wanted to watch that, I’d just turn on DAYS.
“There are four on my mantlepiece in L.A., and two at my home in Amsterdam, because I won them in New York when I was on my way to Amsterdam. It made no sense to bring them back to the U.S. Four on a mantle is quite a lot. Any more would tend to look a little greedy.”
— Geary on where he keeps his six Emmy Awards
Translation: Where’s my seventh Emmy, damn it?
“He will always live haunted by the death of that child — you'd have to unless you're a sociopath — so there will always be regret, guilt, sadness. It's now a part of him and it has taken him to a deeper, more human place. He always knew he wasn't a hero. Now he knows there's a villain inside him. As far as the drinking goes, I don't think he's worried about what would happen to him if he went back to the bottle. It's more like he doesn't want to go through all the shit people will give him if he does drink. He doesn't want all that fucking noise. I do believe he could have a drink and walk away from it. He was never the delirium tremens kind of guy. He never woke up in the morning thinking about having booze. He still doesn't think he's an alcoholic and I agree. At the same time, he did handle a lot of his feelings by getting drunk... and truthfully that started when they had nothing else for me to do. That was the bad side of the Guza years.”
— Geary on Luke’s alcoholism and redemption.
Translation: I don’t have a drinking problem, either, damn it!
“A bevy of syndicated talk shows will premiere in the fall, all with hopes of shoring up afternoon time slots that have been disrupted by Ms. Winfrey’s departure. Of the new entrants, Katie Couric’s show is the one most frequently compared to Ms. Winfrey’s. It will be televised by WABC at 3 p.m., and Mr. Davis said he thinks that it will ‘help our news and information flow, from 3 to 4 to 5.’ But without Ms. Winfrey on broadcast television, the bar will be lower than it used to be.”
— A recent NEW YORK TIMES article on how Oprah Winfrey’s absence affects daytime
Translation: It’ll flow all right… right to obscurity.
“She said, ‘I’ve got story,’ and at that point, our conversation stays just about one thing and that’s story. Going in this time, I asked Maria, ‘What are you thinking?’ because I want it to be a little more three-dimensional.”
— Y&R’s Jeff Branson
Translation: We use the term ‘story” loosely around here.
“It’s three of the most talented actors, not just in daytime, but anywhere. Just to have them all interacting in the same storyline is a dream come true and has been really fun. But it makes it harder to decide who should be with whom, because we really just love them all! So maybe they’re going to get into a polymorous relationship. Now that’s a story that hasn’t been done before in daytime.”
— GH head writer Ron Carlivati on Anthony Geary, Finola Hughes and Jane Elliot’s upcoming love triangle
Translation Part One: That’s probably the only unique storyline I’ll tell on GH!
Translation Part Two: Anna belongs with Robert; Luke with Laura; and Tracy with her father, Edward!
“I’m really glad that I’m not a washed-up baseball player now.”
— DAYS’s Bryan Dattilo in a SOAPS IN DEPTH feature interview
Translation: Like Drake Hogestyn!
“Drake Hogestyn is the dad I never had growing up. I respect him as a man and respect his family values and his fatherhood.”
— Dattilo in the same interview
Translation: Oops!
“Thirty years ago smart shows were the exception and now they are the rule, especially scripted. Television shows, television viewers, and television writers have become smarter.”
—ABC President Paul Lee at the Banff World Media Festival
Translation: With the exception of our daytime-TV lineups.
TWAT BLOG
Was Brian Presley Set Up?
More proof social media is out of control? When I first saw the Twitter feed posted by an obscure model who sat next to former PORT CHARLES hunk Brian Presley, I knew something was fishy.
During a red-eye flight with the actor (who is married to his former PC co-star Erin Hershey), the model sitting next to him tweeted that she saw Brian, a recovering alcoholic, drink beer and hit on her during their travels. Red flag number one: Sh
e knew an awful lot about a random actor who isn’t super-famous. Red flag number two: You have to question someone’s motives and intentions when they tweet a live encounter, even snapping a photo of him sleeping. Um, stalk much?
However, when the story went viral (thanks to a few soap sites who claim they don’t print personal gossip); Presley released a statement on his Facebook page denying the tale. He wrote: "I love that I took a red eye flight to NY, had a 10 minute friendly conversation with the person sitting next to me, had some food, and went to sleep! I learned today this person has been tweeting about me drinking beer in the airplane bathroom, and trying to commit adultery with her on the airplane. Really absurd and quite funny! ... They Even took pictures of me while I was sleeping…. None of what this person said happened is true! I guess in today's age you have to be careful who you say hello too. Sobriety, God, & My Family are the most important things in my life! My Wife Rocks, My Kids Rock,
